Hamburg, 19 November 2024 – Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, developer of integrated & hybrid clean energy solutions and an independent power producer, has commenced construction on a new battery storage project. Located in Wetzen, Lower Saxony, this 56 MW / 112 MWh facility will be a further addition to Germany’s energy storage landscape, supporting the country’s energy transition.
The Wetzen facility is part of a larger portfolio of Aquila Clean Energy EMEA, which will develop 14 battery storage projects in Germany with a total storage capacity of over 900 MW. Positioned in a region with favourable renewable energy conditions, Wetzen will help balance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy.
Wetzen Project – Expanding Battery Storage Capacity in Germany

As a two-hour storage system, the Wetzen facility is tailored for both grid balancing and wholesale market optimisation. The technology will allow for storing electricity from renewable sources at its full 56 MW capacity for two hours, then discharging it back into the grid over the same period. This setup can supply approximately 135,000 households with power for two hours.
The Wetzen project is Aquila Clean Energy EMEA’s second standalone BESS asset in the German market for which the company has fully led the procurement and is managing the construction phase. Commissioning is expected in early 2026.
Aquila Clean Energy EMEA’s Commitment to Sustainable Battery Storage
The Wetzen facility will feature advanced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells, free from nickel and cobalt, offering greater sustainability, safety, and longevity. Trina Storage, a global leader in integrated energy storage solutions, will supply the proprietary LFP cells as part of its Elementa battery energy storage system.
Construction, including high-voltage grid connections, will be managed by H&MV Engineering.
Aquila Clean Energy EMEA currently manages a 4.5 GW BESS portfolio across Europe. The company draws on its experience to drive growth in the battery storage sector, aiming to increase Europe’s overall storage capacity. This expansion ensures grid stability, enhances flexibility, and supports the energy transition.
Germany’s Federal Network Agency projects that large battery storage capacity will grow from 1 GW today to 24 GW by 2037, underscoring the high demand for storage projects.
