Aquila Clean Energy connects a new 50MW solar PV plant in Andalusia

– The output of the Aquila Clean Energy plant is sufficient to supply around 26,000 families with clean energy annually

– The installation will avoid emissions equivalent to the CO2 generated by 17,000 cars per year

Madrid, 20th April 2023 – Aquila Clean Energy, a developer and operator of renewable energy projects with a focus on solar and wind power, is connecting its first solar photovoltaic plant in Guillena, Seville. With a capacity of 50 MW, this plant will generate enough energy to supply 26,000 families annually. In addition, around 170 jobs have been created through this installation.

The plant will produce renewable energy at an affordable price, thus reducing the price of electricity and increasing Spain’s energy independence. It will avoid the emission of 25,500 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to the emissions of 17,000 cars on the road.

“It is a pleasure to see the plants in our portfolio complete their development and beginning to generate clean energy to feed into the electricity grid. We aim to continue to materialise our planned projects, thereby helping to drive Spain’s energy transition. We aspire to become one of the Spain’s main players in the renewables sector,” explains Jorge de Miguel, Head of Development and Construction at Aquila Clean Energy in Spain.

Integrated into the natural environment

This plant in Guillena has been designed to guarantee its environmental integration. Measures have been implemented in accordance with the Directorate General for Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change of the Andalusian Regional Government aimed at adapting the plant to the environment and conserving biodiversity.

One of these measures involves the planting of a green screen that surrounds the installation and adapts it to the landscape. This fence will be permeable, allowing wildlife to pass through. It will also have anti-collision plates. It has also been decided that some of the existing cereal crops on the site will be maintained, in order to ensure the solar plant stays compatible with agricultural use of the land.

Furthermore, in order to guarantee the positive impact of these measures, once the plant is in operation, the behaviour of the local fauna will be monitored and studied to ensure its conservation.

A mature portfolio that continues to advance

Aquila Clean Energy’s implementation plan in Spain continues to progress. The company recently obtained an environmental impact statement (EIS) for 1,760 MW of power generation, corresponding to more than 30 projects in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Murcia and Cantabria.

Obtaining environmental permits is a further step in the company’s consolidation in Spain. With these projects, added to those that are at a more advanced stage, Aquila Clean Energy expects to exceed 2 GW of installed renewable capacity in Spain in the next five years.
